Super Bowl Sunday 2021: Where’s the Party?

A socially distanced Super Bowl party.

Super Bowl Sunday is a day woven into the American culture and heritage as much as Independence Day or Thanksgiving. Technically, it marks the end of the football season with a clash between the from the AFC and the NFC. But the “Big Game” is so much more in our nations popular culture. Super Bowl Sunday is a day when friends and family get together to watch the big game and celebrate. Super Bowl parties are known for their great food and large crowds that while cheering on their pick to win championship. For those who are not football fans, there is always the very entertaining commercials and halftime shows that manage to weave themselves into the fabric of pop culture.

However this year was different. While the Super Bowl came with all the usual pre-game hype with 2021 boasting the clash between the G.O.A.T versus the up-and-coming great quarterback, Dr. Fauci and the CDC told us to stay at home with your family until and celebrate with your mask on using noise makers. Once again, they set out with the buzzkill that some how the Super Bowl would become yet another super-spreader like Thanksgiving and Christmas were. For many of us our celebrations of Super Bowl Sunday looked very different this year.

While some decided to spend the day with only those in their household or a very small gathering of friends, others chose to celebrate the game in their recliner with a box of crackers and spray-nozzle cheese. While I saw the videos of from Tampa of throngs of people celebrating what was the first ever hometown Super Bowl victory, others gathered across the country socially distanced in bars and restaurants in a much more subdued and smaller groups. There are others who were in bed by the time the second half started. After all, the next day is a work day.

Regardless of how you celebrated Super Bowl LV, it marked the end of the football season that almost happened. As the league battled the pandemics of CoVid-19 and systemic racism, the NFL pulled through and gave this county what is needed to take our minds off what is wrong with this county, and everything we disagree about and sit down and cheer about something. So as we say goodbye to football for the year, hopefully we can look forward to the new season starting on time this year in August.
