Introduction to the CherokeeLawyer

I practiced law on Main Street, Canton, in Cherokee County, Georgia for the last twenty-five years. In that time I tried cases to juries and judges, negotiated settlements, interviewed witnesses and met with clients on my way to building a successful practice on the edge of between suburban Metro Atlanta and rural North Georgia. My office overlooks Pine Log Mountain at the Southern end of the Applachian Mountains. The people who live and work here in Cherokee County and the surrounding area are some of the best people in the world and it has been my privilege to represent them over the years. There have been cases representing everyone from the wealthy business owners, Grammy Award winning Country Music stars to the the indigent.

However, there is more than just living life in six minutes increments working the office or running around the courthouse between hearings. When I was a young lawyer eager to please the parters at the small law firm I started my career, one of the partners told me, “don’t take this the wrong way but get a life.” I cannot say that that talk turned my life around but over years I slowly took onboard the wisdom. Slowly I learned how to live life both inside and outside the practice of law. At the office I work hard and harness technology so I can get get more done in less time. Outside the office I spend time with family and friends.

Outside the office, I spend my time with family and friends. I have carried interest that include playing guitar, reading, meditating, boating, hiking, playing tennis, playing golf and of course writing. I spend Tim with the love of my life, Margaret Washburn as well as our cast of interesting friends, neighbors, children and now grandchildren. Occasionally our schedule even allows for some interesting travel adventures. I love serving the community I live and work in. I am a part-time magistrate and I enjoy volunteering with community and church groups.

The object of the CherokeeLawyer is to chronicle the adventures of practicing law in Cherokee County, both in the office, in the courtroom, in the community and in real life. It is my hope that this blog will entertain its reader and serve as inspiration for other lawyers to live well.
